The LTE-Broadcast Alliance added five new operator members and a host of vendor partners, as it looks to boost global support for the technology.
EE, a co-founder of the alliance alongside Verizon, Telstra and Korea Telecom, named HKT, CSL Mobile, Reliance Jio, Smartfren, TIM and Turkcell as new operator partners.
Together, the companies’ in the alliance now represent more than 370 million subscribers.
It will also be boosted by the addition of the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), as well as vendors Ericsson, Expway, Huawei, Netgear and Nokia as supporters.
The alliance was formed in April to facilitate the development of the ecosystem around the technology, as well as gain support from device makers.
Market watchers observed that after an initial bout of enthusiasm for the technology through various pilots and trials, momentum around LTE-B has waned somewhat, which could have led to the formation of the alliance.
The technology has been pitched as the most effective way to provide TV and video content in crowded and congested areas, with EE among its biggest advocates.
In a statement, the company said recent sporting events such as the Olympics in Brazil and the European Football championships set new video streaming records, and “show the benefit LTE-B can bring to customer experience”.
Mike Wright, Telstra’s general managing director of networks, added that the Olympics was the most “streamed sporting event in the history of Telstra’s network”.
“During some events, our customers watching on mobile added the equivalent of 25 per cent of our peak daily demand to our network data traffic”.
