T-Mobile USA will launch its second Android-based device “early this summer,” the operator said in an emailed statement yesterday, reports PC Mag. The device – widely assumed to be the HTC Magic – will follow its earlier launch of the HTC Dream (branded as the T-Mobile G1), which it began offering last Autumn. The G1 was the first device launched based on the Google-backed Android platform and the operator claims to have sold over 1 million units to date. The G1 was recently upgraded to the second version of the Android software, Android OS 1.5 (also known as ‘Cupcake’).

The HTC-manufactured Dream and Magic are currently the only two Android devices commercially available, the latter offered in Europe from the likes of Vodafone. However, Google has forecast that there could be as many as 20 smartphones based on its Android operating system available on the market by year-end, from eight or nine different manufacturers. Meanwhile, Rogers Wireless launched both the Dream and Magic in Canada this week as planned.
