T-Mobile US continued its momentum in Q4 2015, almost tripling net income as its aggressive tactics to secure new subscribers continued to generate growth.

The company, led by outspoken CEO John Legere, said net income hit $297 million for the quarter to 31 December, up from $101 million in Q4 2014, on total revenue of $8.2 billion, up 1.1 per cent.

As revealed previously, Q4 2015 also saw the company add 2.1 million net customers during the period, giving it more than 63 million subscribers in total, and marking 11 consecutive quarters of more than one million adds, as well as three quarters in a row with more than two million net additions.

Throughout the year, T-Mobile US has unveiled a number of new promotions intended to grow its subscriber base, including data rollover plans, new upgrade programmes and free music and video streaming services.

And in the company’s earnings call, Legere said today’s result announcement proves the company’s “uncarrier” model is working.

“It’s another great quarter, and our results show the business is firing on all cylinders. Our financial results speak for themselves and customer growth continues to lead to financial growth.”

“We set out to change this industry, we’re well on our way and we won’t stop,” he added in a statement.

Revenue
Service revenue for the quarter also grew “by an industry leading 11.7 percent”, reaching $6.6 billion, from $5.9 billion, with T-Mobile US putting the growth down to the rapid growth of its consumer base.

Equipment revenue, however, dropped 29.5 per cent to $1.5 billion, from $2.2 billion the quarter year prior, which was due to a shift in strategy to its Jump On Demand programme.

It also said adjusted EBITDA grew 30.2 per cent to reach $2.3 billion, primarily due to higher service revenue, MetroPCS synergies, focused cost control and decreased losses on equipment sales.

The company also noted the figure was partially offset by higher selling, general and administrative expenses due to customer growth.

Along with its promotional activity, the company has worked on expanding its LTE network. T-Mobile said it has more than doubled its 4G footprint during the year, now reaching a population of 305 million, exceeding its goal of 300 million.

Legere also confirmed in the earnings call that the company intends to participate in the upcoming US incentive auction, scheduled to kick off on 29 March.
