Toshiba has unveiled the first mobile device based on Qualcomm’s ‘Snapdragon’ chip, reports Slash Gear. The touchscreen smartphone – known as the Toshiba TG01 – is based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 platform and is being seen as a potential competitor to Apple’s iPhone. The device is set to be the first to use Qualcomm’s QSD2850 Snapdragon chipset, which boasts a 1GHz processor core, twice as fast as the chipsets used in most current smartphones.
According to the report, the phone supports HSPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and A-GPS, and will be optimised to work with popular websites such as Facebook, Google and YouTube. Toshiba said it expects the TG01 to be available in Europe this summer and is already in talks with operators concerning exclusivity deals. Pricing details were not disclosed. The vendor is expected to release more information on the device at this month’s GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
