Virgin Mobile USA – the MVNO that is soon to be acquired by Sprint Nextel for US$483 million – today reported that second-quarter profit soared on lower expenses despite another net loss of subscribers. It posted income of US$17.2 million, up from US$3.5 million a year earlier. Revenue decreased 3.8 percent to US$307.6 million. Virgin Mobile lost 269,239 net customers during the quarter, more than double the number it lost a year earlier. It had 535,558 gross additions, down 26 percent, to end the quarter with 5 million customers, flat from a year earlier.
