Credit card giant MasterCard has announced 17 NFC handsets have been certified for use with point-of-sale terminals based on its PayPass technology including the Nokia Lumia 610 NFC, HTC One X and Intel Smartphone Reference Device. MasterCard also announced a new brand for manufacturers to use with NFC smartphones that identifies to consumers the device is PayPass certified. The brand will carry the tag line MasterCard PayPass Ready which can appear on the handset itself as well as its packaging and associated marketing. Both Nokia and RIM have backed the scheme. The former’s Lumia 610 NFC will be part of it.

The full list of 17 handsets certified by MasterCard is RIM’s BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9790, BlackBerry Curve 9360 and 9380, HTC One X, Intel Smartphone Reference Design, LG Viper 4G LTE, LG Optimus Elite, Nokia 603, Nokia Lumia 610 NFC, Samsung Wave Y, Samsung Galaxy mini 2, Samsung Galaxy S Advance, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GT-i9250), Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia sola.
