Live from the mHealth Summit, Washington DC: The mHealth Alliance and the Rockefeller Foundation have announced the winners of the first Top 11 in 2011 Innovators Challenge, a prize that recognizes individuals who have created innovative mobile health services from around the world. The winners were announced ahead of this year’s mHealth Summit in Washington DC (5-7 December). They have been brought to the event to share their work with experts in the field.

The winners include a couple of already well-known projects such as Eric Woods’ MDNet, a networking program for physicians in Ghana and Liberia, and Bright Simmons for mPedigree, a platform that uses mobile technology to fight counterfeit medicines. Other winners include Ashok Jhunjhunwala for Voice Net, a personalized voice-based information retrieval and transaction service which utilises local language voice recognition to aid healthcare delivery in India, and Aydogan Ozcan for a cost-effective, portable microscope and diagnostics tools for telemedicine in developing countries.
