Vine, the short form video app, will live on as a pared-down camera offering from January 2017, as Twitter backtracked on a decision to completely shut down the service.
In a blog post, Vine said it will now transition to a camera app, allowing users to make six second looping videos and post them directly to Twitter or save them on users’ smartphones.
However, Vine will no longer run as a standalone social network.
Twitter said in October it would shut down Vine, without offering any reason why it made the decision.
Vine brought video to Twitter for the first time and the service once reached a peak of 100 million people watching videos on the platform. However, its popularity dwindled in recent years.
Twitter subsequently received interest from more than 10 potential buyers for the service.
However, with most offers under $10 million, Twitter opted to keep Vine going instead of selling up, or indeed killing it altogether.
