Apps analysis firm Distimo said the impact of Samsung reaching 5 million app downloads for its TV apps is “not that heavy,” with it having taken 15 months to reach this milestone. It notes that “downloading apps on a TV is brand new for consumers, and it takes a while for new supported devices to enter consumer’s homes,” especially as the refresh cycle for televisions is much longer than for mobile phones. It also said that “to generate a large volume of downloads, high quality apps are needed that utilise TV capabilities well and are not just a slightly modified website.” Samsung said that downloads are (perhaps unsurprisingly) dominated by video apps.
