Messaging app and social network LINE passed 100 million users globally and is gaining around three million new subscribers each week.
Since launching in June 2011, the app has seen strong growth in Asia, but is now focusing on North America, with plans to add more communications and entertainment content.
LINE gives users free voice calls and messages on iOS, Android and Windows Phone over 3G and 4G mobile broadband as well as Wi-Fi.
The LINE platform also includes LINE Camera and LINE Games. LINE Tools and the LINE Antivirus app were recently launched.
“As we grow our business globally, we strive to always be one step ahead of users’ needs and offer a wide variety of services to meet their quickly changing tastes,” said Akira Morikawa, CEO of LINE parent company NHN Japan.
LINE Camera has reached 20 million downloads 10 months after it was launched and is ranked number on in the camera category in Apple’s App Store in 27 countries. LINE has also begun to integrate its mobile messaging app into games.
New features have driven an increase in users in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The service has passed 10 million users in Thailand and Taiwan and has also seen strong growth in Eastern Europe and Spanish-speaking countries including Spain, Chile and Mexico.
