2024 is footnoted by the beginning of large-scale commercial use of 5.5G, and the integration of AI into mobile devices. In the mobile AI era, the innovative application upgrade in mobile communications is accelerating, which will bring huge social and economic impacts to our daily life.
#1 5.5G & AI Upgrade Connection Experience of People and Homes
Video services, such as live streaming, HD movie, and cloud gaming, are the main consumers of mobile traffic. How to ensure user experience and provide differentiated services in congested scenarios such as concerts, exhibitions, sports events, subways, or even the high-speed trains has always been a challenge for mobile operators.
At the 5.5G park, the user-specific features such as “real-time accurate experience awareness” and “on-demand dynamic experience assurance” are implemented through the 10 Gbps downlink and Gbps uplink capabilities of the 5.5G network combined with AI technologies. In addition, the increasing demand for multi-dimensional experience also pushes operators to transform from the single-dimensional traffic monetization to the multi-dimensional experience monetization.
#2 5.5G & AI Accelerate the Development of Autonomous-driving Vehicles and Industrial Robots
5.5G+AI and autonomous-driving vehicles are truly a match made in heaven. Autonomous-driving vehicles can be used for automatic pickup. 5.5G and AI enable them to intelligently select the best route based on traffic lights and the road conditions, while avoiding obstacles along the way. In the case of exceptions, the control center can take over the driving immediately. This has significantly improved the efficiency and safety of the autonomous-driving vehicles application.
Look at this. Is it a robot, or a dog? It’s an intelligent robot dog, or more accurately, an “intelligent quadruped robot”. You see, the rotating lidar with gleaming green lights and the front-facing camera are its eyes, which are able to capture 360-degree environmental data without a blind spot. The silicon-based microphones are its ears, which can understand your instructions. It also has gyroscopes that can sense direction and acceleration to help it balance itself. This robot dog can accompany you anywhere you go, as your pet, or even as your guide. If we give it more features and tools, such as high-precision telephoto cameras, thermal imagers, and manipulators, a robot dog can play an important role in industry applications such as emergency rescue and security patrols.
Be it autonomous-driving vehicles, humanoid robots, or quadruped robots they are all in the category of “embodied AI”. Compared with the foundation model, the entities enabled with “embodied AI” are smarter and can better understand the physical world. This comes from the closer combination of 5.5G and AI. The uplink Gbps capability of 5.5G allows each embodied AI entity to upload hundreds of GB of data per month, which helps them deepen their understanding of the surroundings. The millisecond-level low latency of 5.5G helps implement crowd intelligence through the efficient collaboration between mobile clouds, edges and devices for embodied AI entities. Moreover, the innovative services of “embodied AI” can also provide operators with new monetization points through computing power and storage resource packages.
#3 Intelligent Connections of Everything
“What a dunk, nice!” A great move on the court ignited the whole sport venue. A special game of basketball is taking place in the 5.5G park. This is not an ordinary live-streaming sport event. It is a game supported by 5.5G intelligent IoT technologies. Every player’s position on the field, every movement of the basketball, and every wonderful point, are recorded in the form of data and sent to the cloud in real time over the 5.5G network for big data analysis and model training. 5.5G supports all-scenario IoT through enhanced RedCap (eRedCap) and Passive-IoT, which are more cost-effective forms of connections. The power consumption of a single module in sleep mode is less than 10 W.
