LG Electronics said it had begun the worldwide rollout of its first TD-LTE smartphones, as the recovering device maker looks to bolster its position in the 4G device market.

The company said that it will start in Saudi Arabia, working with operator STC to offer a version of the Optimus G device, and plans to offer devices in China, India, North America, Japan and Australia this year.

Additional countries will follow, it said.

“LTE TDD is a superior alternative in some countries due to its flexibility in uploading and downloading content. We’re excited to offer consumers LTE TDD capable smartphones based on our unparalleled knowhow in 4G LTE technologies”.

LG recently claimed its biggest ever quarter for smartphone sales, with the 10.3 million units shifted enough to land it third place in this market, according to IDC.

The South Korean vendor showcased its first TD-LTE device at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.
