The European Commission has told France and Spain to drop a tax levied on telecoms service providers which is used to subsidise public service television broadcasters, with the potential for further action if the countries do not comply within two months. The EU believes that charges made to operators should be directly related to the costs of regulating the telecoms industry, and not to cross-subsidise other sectors.
