Japanese number-one operator NTT Docomo has signed up Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Panasonic Mobile to provide the technology for LTE-Advanced services to be deployed by 2015.

LTE-Advanced is the next generation of 4G technology and uses two or more wireless frequencies to allow more data to be carried more rapidly, boosting capacity. NTT Docomo plans an initial capacity of 300Mb/s, which should enable cloud-based architecture and services.

The deal also includes the provision of small cell networks, which will enhance coverage and capacity of the LTE-Advanced network in high-traffic areas.

NSN and Panasonic will develop and deliver base station hardware and software based on NSN’s Liquid Radio architecture.

“With this, NTT Docomo will be able to address ever-increasing subscriber needs for higher bandwidth and better quality of services in Japan, one of the most advanced mobile markets in the world,” said NSN’s head of Japan Region, JP Takala.

Telstra plans to launch LTE-Advanced services this year, a move that could make the Australian number-one the first operator in the world to offer the next generation 4G technology.
