Human Mobile Devices (HMD) marked its entry to the non-terrestrial network (NTN) sector with a device which could throw the cat among the pigeons in terms of other manufacturers’ efforts to deliver satellite connectivity direct to phones.
The HMD OffGrid offers direct L-band satellite connectivity for iOS and Android users through a dedicated app, unlocking a host of features targeting those disposed to an outdoorsy lifestyle.
Chief among the HMD OffGrid options is access to an SOS service from emergency response provider FocusPoint International offering round-the-clock assistance in multiple languages.
The app itself delivers two-way messaging functionality and live location tracking for up to five people. “It also has a check in feature allowing you to send a pre-configured message to friends and family” using a dedicated button, the vendor stated.
HMD asserted a battery life of up to three days, though noted this was achieved “using an endurance test model under controlled indoor conditions with no satellite network connection”.
The HMD OffGrid carries durability certification complying with US military standards and weighs 60 grams.
Greg Pearson, founder and CEO at FocusPoint International, stated the companies hoped to “expand the possibilities for exploration” by enabling users to safely stray beyond the reach of terrestrial mobile networks.
Costs
The device itself is priced at $199, with initial sales due to commence this month in the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand before being expanded elsewhere over the course of 2025.
There are two main subscription offers, one priced at $139.99 per year offering unlimited messages, check-in and SOS services with an optional live tracking service for $4.99 per month.
The other tariff is a one-time annual payment of $79.99, which offers up to 350 text and check-in messages and the same tracking add-on.
HMD’s unlimited option carries a one-off activation fee of $9.99 and the latter plan $19.99.
