PRESS RELEASE: China Telecom Shanghai, in collaboration with Huawei, has deployed its first 5G-A indoor base station LampSite X. This indoor coverage solution uses the industry’s first tri-band, large-capacity pRRUs (supporting 1.8 GHz + 2.1 GHz + 3.5 GHz), as well as 3CC CA and Distributed Massive MIMO to offer a downlink rate of 4.22 Gbps. It also enables Super Uplink to achieve an uplink rate of 914 Mbps. This deployment marks the beginning of commercial use of 5G-A in indoor scenarios, which promises to significantly improve user experience.

To meet the elevated expectations of users in the 5G era, China Telecom Shanghai is committed to creating a 5G mobile network that prioritizes user experience from end to end, with a particular focus on key areas with high traffic and frequent handovers. Earlier this year, China Telecom Shanghai became the first operator to deploy 100 FDD+TDD 3CC sites, utilizing multi-band coordination capabilities including carrier aggregation and Super Uplink. In the process, the operator built a 5G-A network capable of delivering Gbps speeds in both uplink and downlink, which now supports massive concurrent bandwidth-hungry services such as HD video and livestreaming.

Hongqiao Vanke Center, located in the bustling Shanghai Hongqiao International CBD, is a smart commercial complex that incorporates eco-friendly technologies into its design, offering customers a holistic environment in which to work, relax, and recharge. China Telecom’s 5G-A LampSite X base station is seamlessly integrated into the ceilings of a shopping mall in the center. Compared to other products in its class, it is over 40% smaller and lighter, and consumes 30% less power. The base station introduces 3CC CA and Huawei-proprietary Distributed Massive MIMO to significantly enhance cell capacity and user experience. China Telecom and Huawei had already enabled Super Uplink at all China Telecom Shanghai’s outdoor sites, where the feature proved its effectiveness in increasing uplink coverage and experience. Now, in Hongqiao Vanke Center, Super Uplink has been put into use in an indoor environment for the first time, with test results showing a 20% increase in uplink speeds. In addition, the ultra-deep dormancy feature has been activated to address the ebb and flow of indoor services. It allows the base station to operate at full power during peak hours and hibernate during off-peak hours, contributing to energy-efficient, green communications.

As diverse 5G applications and services emerge, users expect more from their network provides in terms of network bandwidth, latency, and reliability. China Telecom Shanghai will continue collaborating with industry partners to enhance network quality, pioneering the large-scale deployment of commercial 5G-A networks. Their goal is to drive the digital economy, delivering dual 10-Gbps connections to support Shanghai in fostering a flourishing business environment.
