Nokia – the world’s largest handset vendor – today unveiled its first phone based on TD-SCDMA, China’s domestic 3G standard, at an event in Beijing. Nokia said in a statement that the new device – the Nokia 6788 – is specifically designed for China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network and will ship with a range of integrated China Mobile applications. “The Nokia 6788 marks a new level of collaboration with China Mobile and offers enriched experiences to China’s 3G users,” said Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, adding that Nokia plans to introduce further TD-SCDMA phones in “the near future.” The Symbian-based device features a 5-megapixel (2592 x1944) camera with a dual-LED flash, and a 2.8″ QVGA display. “Such cooperation between the world’s largest operator and the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer will provide an important boost to the development of TD-SCDMA in China,” added China Mobile VP, Lu Xiangdong.
In a separate announcement today, Nokia said it had joined forces with SAP and Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) to create a new company called ‘Original1’ to deliver product authentication and anti-counterfeiting services. The company aims to protect companies and consumers in a wide range of industries from product piracy and counterfeiting. Original1 will be headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, and headed by Claudia Alsdorf, currently vice president of SAP Research. The new company is expected to begin operations before the end of 2009, subject to approvals by the anti-trust authorities.
