US number three operator Sprint Nextel is to cut its mobile broadband prices for its fastest data service, to offer 20 percent more data compared to rivals for the price. Customers will be charged US$49.99/month for 6GB of data downloads on Sprint's fastest service, which uses the Clearwire mobile WiMAX network. In contrast, AT&T and Verizon Wireless both charge US$50 per month for 5GB of data. Reuters notes that the price cut comes two weeks after Sprint announced it would scrap unlimited data plans for WiMAX customers and started to charge US$60 per month for 5GB of data, making it (briefly) more expensive than rivals.
