South Korea’s third largest mobile operator LG Uplus aims to reduce interference on its tri-band carrier aggregation LTE-Advanced network by using Cloud Digital Unit (DU) technology.

The operator, with a 19 per cent market share, operates its LTE-A network on three different frequencies, which leads to interference between base stations and creates so-called ‘blind’ spots.

Cloud DU aims to connect digital information processing units in base stations through a cloud network to eliminate network blind spots, an LG Uplus representative said.

The operator developed the technology in partnership with Huawei last year and plans to deploy it over its nationwide LTE network.

LTE customers account for 83 per cent of its 10.6 million connections, according to GSMA Intelligence.

More than a year ago both LG Uplus and SK Telecom trialled tri-band LTE carrier aggregation, which they claimed can offer peak speeds of 300Mb/s.

SK Telecom announced last June that its new LTE-A service supports speeds of up to 225Mb/s using carrier aggregation.
