Taiwanese smartphone vendor HTC is reportedly planning to launch an Android-based phone with a full 3D display by this time next year.

Apple is recruiting a team of lawyers who have fought for and against some of the world’s largest companies – such as Microsoft, Intel and Broadcom – as the Californian vendor begins its legal case with Nokia before the International Trade Commission (ITC) this week.

Peter Chou, CEO of fast-growing Taiwanese smartphone vendor HTC, used his keynote at the GSMA Mobile Asia Congress this morning to explain how the firm is embracing cloud computing as a way to expand the power and functionality of its smart devices.

The CEO’s of HTC and NTT Docomo this morning rejected the notion that the mobile industry’s most profitable days are over, claiming that the rising use of smartphones and apps will boost revenue growth. Docomo’s president Ryuji Yamada went so far as to say that it is targeting higher ARPU from data services than voice services “within this fiscal year” (up from the 48.8 percent that data services currently contribute to the operator's total ARPU levels)

The legal action between Google and Oracle about the use of patented Java technology in Android rumbled on, with Google responding to the latest claims by arguing that – among other things – it is not responsible for the actions of third parties offering products using the platform.

The Register reports that HTC, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, alongside Exedea and Kyocera, have been named in a patent infringement lawsuit by SmartPhone Technologies LLC.
