Saudi Telecom Company (STC) is looking to introduce controls on data network usage as it moves ahead with plans to expand availability of content-intensive smartphones across its international base. In a wide-ranging interview with Mobile World Live, Ghassan Hasbani, the operator’s CEO of international operations, noted that the company is seeing “an explosive increase in mobile data, predominantly driven by user-generated data and by television content… So what we’re looking to build into our networks is ‘smart’ capabilities that allow us to manage this data traffic in such a way that it does not allow 100 percent equal access to everybody. And I know this is a controversial point of view but in the end what we’re serving is emerging market customers who barely have any fixed Internet connectivity.”
