The Chief Executive of movie-rental company Blockbuster has said the firm is working on a flash memory device to aid delivery of digital content to mobile devices. According to an Associated Press report, Jim Keyes told the Citigroup Annual Global Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference this week that Blockbuster is developing a microSD chip for sideload capability into portable devices. Sideloading is the act of copying digital files from a computer to devices such as mobile phones, and vice versa. Keyes added that the company is looking at ways for its customers to directly download video content to their portable devices.

In November last year Mobile Business Briefing reported that Blockbuster was in talks with mobile phone manufacturers to launch a mobile video service, three months after it had acquired online movie portal Movielink. Blockbuster entered the online rental space in 2004 and has been trying to increase its online activities to fend off competition from Netflix, the online movie rental store which has no physical stores.
