EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Ryuji Yamada, chief executive officer and president of Japan’s largest operator, has told Mobile World Live of NTT Docomo’s strategy for migrating its 3G customers to faster LTE services.

In an exclusive interview, Yamada cites three main areas of focus: firstly, it will expand its lineup of LTE-enabled devices this year; secondly, Docomo will offer “attractive LTE billing plans,” including free voice services; and thirdly, it will increase network capex. “In the first three years through fiscal 2012, we plan to spend a total of JPY 330 billion [US$4.3 billion] and in the next three years between 2013 and 2015 fiscal we would like to spend a cumulative JPY 550 billion,” comments Yamada in the interview. And with that we will aim to increase the population coverage to 98 percent by fiscal 2014.”

Elsewhere in the interview the Docomo head reveals his company’s plans in the cloud, NFC and M2M sectors, and comments on its strategy for international expansion.
